Leading Scientists and Innovators

Edward W. Large, Ph.D.

Edward W. Large, Ph.D.

Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Director, Music Dynamics Laboratory and Co-Director, Theoretical Neuroscience Laboratory at UCONN.

Edward Large, PhD is Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Oscillo Biosciences and Director of the Music Dynamics Laboratory at the University of Connecticut. He is also Professor of Psychological Sciences and Professor of Physics, and Co-Director of the Theoretical Neuroscience Laboratory.

Dr. Large is a leading theoretical neuroscientist whose work focuses on the dynamics of brain activity underlying music perception, cognition, and emotion. His research integrates nonlinear dynamical systems theory with behavioral experiments and neuroimaging to understand how the brain processes complex, temporally structured sound such as music and speech. He is widely recognized for pioneering the concept that attention and perception are inherently rhythmic processes, and for developing foundational theories—such as neural resonance theory—that explain how brain activity synchronizes with musical structure.

Dr. Large received his PhD from The Ohio State University and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania. He has published over nearly 100 scientific articles, holds multiple patents, and has received numerous honors including a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation and a Fulbright Visiting Chair at McGill University.

A former President of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition, Dr. Large has played a central role in advancing the scientific study of music and the brain.

At Oscillo Biosciences, Dr. Large leads the company’s vision and strategy, translating decades of research in neural dynamics and music cognition into innovative therapeutic approaches that use music and synchronized sensory stimulation to influence brain function and improve neurological health.

Ji Chul Kim, Ph.D.

Co-Founder & Chief Science Officer

Assistant Research Professor, Music Dynamics Laboratory

Ji Chul Kim, PhD is Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer of Oscillo Biosciences and serves as Assistant Research Professor in the Music Dynamics Laboratory at the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Kim is a computational neuroscientist and music psychologist whose work focuses on the dynamics of human perception, action, and cognition. His research applies mathematical and dynamical systems modeling to understand how the brain processes music, coordinates rhythmic movement, and forms complex perceptual and cognitive representations.

He studied physics and music theory at Seoul National University and earned his PhD in Music Theory and Cognition from Northwestern University. He joined the Music Dynamics Laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow in 2011 and continues his research there, advancing theoretical frameworks that explain neural oscillations and their role in auditory perception and behavior.

Dr. Kim has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications, holds multiple patents, and has received research funding from leading institutions including the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

At Oscillo Biosciences, Dr. Kim leads scientific strategy and research development, translating foundational discoveries in neural entrainment and music cognition into novel therapeutic approaches. His work contributes to the development of non-invasive interventions that combine music and synchronized sensory stimulation to address neurological conditions such as mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease.

Psyche Loui, Ph.D.

Psyche Loui, Ph.D.

Scientific Advisor & Clinical Trials Lead

Associate Professor, Department of Music, Northeastern University

Psyche Loui, PhD is Associate Professor of Creativity and Creative Practice in the Department of Music at Northeastern University, where she also serves as Associate Dean for Research and directs the MIND (Music, Imaging, and Neural Dynamics) Lab. She is additionally affiliated with the Department of Psychology and the Institute for Cognitive and Brain Health.

Dr. Loui’s research focuses on the neuroscience of music perception and cognition, investigating how brain structure and connectivity give rise to musical experience, emotion, and learning. Her work explores topics such as auditory and multisensory perception, memory for sound, and the role of music in neurological and psychiatric health.

She holds a PhD in Psychology (Cognition, Brain, and Behavior) from the University of California, Berkeley and dual undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Music, along with a certificate in Neuroscience, from Duke University.

Prior to joining Northeastern, Dr. Loui held faculty positions in psychology, neuroscience, and integrative sciences at Wesleyan University and served as an instructor in neurology at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Her research has been supported by leading institutions including the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, and she has received honors such as a Young Investigator Award from the Positive Neuroscience Institute and a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation. Her work has also received recognition from the Grammy Awards.

Dr. Loui currently serves as President of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition, reflecting her leadership in the field. Her research has been widely featured in major media outlets including The New York Times, BBC, CNN, and The Boston Globe, underscoring the broad impact of her work at the intersection of music, neuroscience, and human health.
